Engineering Designer / Mold Designer

Our client, a fast-growing engineering resources company, is hiring an Engineering Designer to join the team. 

The Engineering Designer is responsible for designing molds from concept to completion, handling technical challenges related to the operation & maintenance of Blow Molding Production. The designer will play a pivotal role in meeting customer expectations for quality and on-time delivery.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for designing molds from concept to completion, design fully automatic injection molds and tools.
  • Participate in project quoting and manage blow mold design projects from start to finish. Interacting with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Tooling feasibility of plastic injection molded part and design change proposal, design injection mold from concept to final completion.
  • 3D Tooling design – hot runner / cold runner / multiple cavity / multi-shot / complex slides and undercuts / prototype.
  • Fixture design – assembly fixtures/quality inspection fixtures.
  • Managing BOM and ordering material and components, necessary detail drawings.
  • Maintains all documentation as required: Mold design/part design/engineering changes and Document Control procedures.
  • Work with injection molding machines, secondary equipment and tooling to reduce downtime and improve efficiency.
  • Provide first-level technical support on operational or maintenance issues using documented procedures and available tools.
  • Act independently to support customer needs that are technically and interpersonally complex in nature.
  • Identify, diagnose, and resolve issues as related to the hot runner & observed in the molded plastic part or injection molding process.
  • Advise/educate customers and team members within procedural guidelines to ensure a complete solution to their technical or service questions.
  • Travel to the customer as determined necessary to better carry out technical problem identification and resolution.
  • Documents and identifies all customer requirements and specifications as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Skills, Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in the plastics industry tooling design.
  • Diploma in Engineering or equivalent education/experience.
  • Proficient with engineering specifications and drawing comprehension.
  • GD&T and customer performance specifications should be well understood.
  • Must have experience processing plastics and blow moulding process.
  • Preferred experience in the medical manufacturing industry.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement principles required.
  • Sound problem-solving skills (including problem identification and solutions, both individually and with a team).
  • Good communication, organizational, time management skills.
  • Experience developing and writing work instructions.
  • Good knowledge of SPC, (Statistical Process Control).
