A leading automotive company is hiring Plant Metallurgist NDT Specialist in Mississauga.
Salary is $70,000/yr
Major Job Responsibilities:
- Act as a metallurgical resource for Operations, Engineering and Quality groups.
- Ownership of a family of processes required to test manufactured components in an efficient and reliable manner.
- Be an integral part of the team focused on development of processes and supporting documentation for new programs and the improvement of existing products with respect to the Quality Lab function.
- Source and implement new lab equipment.
- Ensure equipment compliance with established safety regulatory guidelines.
- Develop lab area utilizing fundamental 5S and visual management principles.
- Facilitate and participate in the training of employees on new lab equipment and processes.
- Participation as needed on APQP teams.
- Give direction to Met Lab personnel as required.
- Review potential new products and provide recommendations on materials and process selection as part of the Feasibility Review Team.
- Ensure all customer prototype submissions meet metallurgical requirements and are documented appropriately.
- Identify and champion the resolution of metallurgical problems for both series production and prototype parts using disciplined problem solving techniques.
- Track and develop action plans to improve Lab techniques and processes through continuous improvement initiatives.
- Communicate to management, colleagues, customers and suppliers on progress where appropriate and using appropriate methods.
- Development and documenting of lab procedures and standards for metallurgical evaluations.
- Ensure that all internal failures and customer-returns are evaluated using standard failure analysis methods.
- Provide leadership to the lab technicians as required.
- Developing library of good and bad parts needed for building diagnostic patterns (sorting modules): collecting good parts that represent all production variations. Collecting bad parts with all kinds of cracks. The bad parts are made intentionally at compacting, and then processed separately.
- Developing redundant NDT inspection methods (MPI, etc.) to validate new NDT methods.
- Performing metallurgical tests (MPI, metallography) on bad parts to verify and quantify cracks.
- Developing and documenting sorting module on laboratory RI unit.
- Cooperating with vendor in designing production unit. Defining requirements about part position in the test nest.
- Selection and development of reliable NDT methods for production.
- Performing training operations on the method /operation of current and new NDT installations.
- Modifications to sorting criteria during program startups due to production variations, or even deriving new patterns and implementing them.
- Timely retesting (daily, weekly, etc.) all parts rejected by production NDT systems and returning all false rejects to production.
- Analyze sources of variation including weight, dimensional, material, density to improve NDT system robustness.
- All other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Graduate Engineer or Technologist in a Metallurgical or Mechanical discipline.
- 3 to 5 years’ experience in high speed manufacturing with emphasis on Metallurgical Engineering.
- Ability to work and excel in a fast paced environment.
- Knowledge and experience in Quality Systems (ISO, QS, TS) and Lean Manufacturing principles and practices.
- Strong interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and AutoCAD.
- Experience with multiple forms on Non-Destructive testing is an asset.
- Past experience in metallurgical failure analysis including use of SEM
