EHS Manager / Environmental Health & Safety Manager

Our client is one of the world’s largest bearing producers. With Sales offices and Manufacturing plants throughout the
world. Currently, we are seeking an EHS Manager to join the team. 

The company has two operating divisions (the Distribution Division and the Manufacturing Division). The EHS Manager position is based out of the Mississauga Manufacturing Division and provides support to the Distribution Division.

Job Summary:

The EHS Manager is responsible for developing, implementing & maintaining all aspects of the company Canada's Environment, Health and Safety policies and programs that support Manufacturing plant and corporate objectives. This position provides expertise and guidance in all areas of Environment and Health and Safety including: monitoring changes to Canada-wide
Occupational Health and Safety Legislation, Environmental Legislation, and WSIB Claims Management. The EHS Manager will establish and promote a safe and healthy working environment.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Review, develop and maintain the Company’s Environmental Health and Safety System.
  • Perform internal audits to ensure programs meet the requirements of the Company and applicable legislation and regulations.
  • Manage all WSIB claims and the Return to Work program for employees
  • Manage the Environmental Management System that meets the ISO 14001:2015 standard. Associated programs including but not limited to:
    • WHMIS
    • Hazardous Waste Management
    • Emergency Response
    • KPI’s including waste, cardboard, electricity, gas, SWARF
  • Develop and maintain safety programs including but not limited to forklift safety, Lockout Tagout, machine safety, PPE, walking/working surfaces, Hazard Communication, Hazardous Materials, Fire Protection, Confined Space, Electrical Safety.
  • Maintain industrial hygiene sampling program that includes noise dosimetry, heat stress, and air sampling for contaminants such as oil mist; respirable dust, stoddard solvent etc.
  • Conduct Environment Health and Safety orientation for all new employees.
  • Conduct Monthly EHS Awareness Training for both manufacturing and corporate locations.
  • Develop and conduct presentations for hourly and Management
    employees.
  • Monitor and manage the Company’s Pandemic Response Initiative
  • Evaluate and enhance EHS knowledge of employees.
  • Maintain key EHS performance metrics in conjunction with company Japan & America's requirements as well as provide quarterly reports to management regarding EHS performance, initiatives, and programs as required.
  • Arrange for testing of current employees and training for new employees on industrial lifting devices (forklifts, AWP, Cranes)
  • Coordinate Corporate Environmental Initiatives (Tree Planting, Earth Day Activities, Electronics Recycling, Honda Week of Service)
  • Member of Emergency Response Team, Workplace Accommodation Committee, Workplace Violence and Harassment Committee
  • Head of First Aid Team. Arrange for first aid training and manage the First Aid program.
  • Distribute personal protective equipment and train employees on the safe use of PPE.
  • Review Safety Data Sheets for hazards prior to new products being received in the plant.
  • Certified Management Representative on the Joint Health and Safety Committee for both the Manufacturing and Corporate locations. Conduct monthly meetings, prepare agendas and coordinate monthly inspections.
  • Liaise with Government Officials for site visits/inspections.
  • Assist managers & supervisors with accident investigations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced leadership skills to develop, evaluate and facilitate health and safety policies and programs.
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant Canadian health and safety legislation with a specific focus on the Ontario OHSA.
  • Thorough knowledge of safe working practices/programs in a manufacturing environment.
  • Proven interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to provide guidance and coach managers on health and safety issues
  • Able to execute a plan.
  • Experience conducting workplace investigations
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
  • Intermediate to advanced Computer skills, including Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access.
  • Develop and facilitate internal required EHS training for employees
  • Experience Performing Audits of Management Systems (ISO 14001, ISO 45001)
  • Must be familiar with the preparation of charts and graphs.
  • Discretion and the ability to work with confidential and sensitive information

Education and Professional Experience

  • University Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent.
  • CRSP Designation or working towards
  • Three to five years of Health and Safety Management experience in a unionized manufacturing environment.
  • JHSC Certified Representative would be an asset.
  • Forklift Train the Trainer would be an asset
  • Lead Auditor/Internal Auditor Certification for ISO 14001:2014 would be an asset
  • First Aid Certification would be an asset
