Workers Compensation Claims / Health and Safety Specialist

Our company is seeking a dynamic individual to fill the role of Workers Compensation Claims and Safety Specialist where you will leverage your WSIB experience managing injury claims. Working with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that the business is in compliance with relevant government expectations with regards to our return to work process and in a cost-effective manner. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage the claims portfolio which includes filing injuries at the board and managing WSIB files through on-going and daily communication with Case Managers.
  • Facilitate and promote early and safe return-to-work through obtaining and reviewing objective medical information and overseeing modified work programs.
  • Communicate with key client contacts, employees and health care providers in order to facilitate and manage return-to-work planning.
  • Monitor claims for areas of objection and then submit objections/appeals to the provincial compensation board or liaise with an external paralegal as appropriate.
  • Manages moderately complex/litigated claims.
  • Assist the site associates in the avoidance of lost time and reducing the average duration of modified duty through coaching on Return to Work.
  • Create objection letters, prepare rebuttals and represent the company at appeals/tribunals.
  • Liaise with external agencies such as the Ministry, consulting firms and WSIB Account Managers.
  • Facilitate live and online training sessions on relevant statutory regulation and processes.
  • Arrange and attend site Return to Work meetings when required.
  • Arrange job site visits, conduct incident investigations when requested. Lead investigations and find resolutions, including circulating feedback as to root-cause and the necessary corrective and preventative measures.
  • Work collaboratively with other HR and Site Superintendents to resolve complex issues as required.
  • Monitor monthly claims cost statements from the Board.  
  • Maintaining the health and safety board, policy postings and yearly program review. Provide support and counsel to managers and supervisors in matters of preventive health and safety and workplace injury management and ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation.
  • Participate and manage WSIB Health and Safety Excellence program and other safety group program. Act as a Subject Matter Expert in the field of Health and Safety.
  • Provide input in the development of OHS programs and tools, assist in their implementation and maintenance. 
  • Maintain administrative records for HSE and Compliance programs. Participate in HSE inspections and HSE audits.
  • Other duties as required.

Job Requirements:

  • Over 3 years of experience managing WSIB Ontario claims, return to work claims
  • Bachelor’s degree in fields such as HSE, HR or business administration or equivalent
  • Over 3 years Return to Work planning and facilitation
  • WSIB appeals experience
  • NEER Rating experience
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy and effects of illness/injury on physiology
  • Knowledge of disability management and procedures
  • Superior communication skills both verbal and written in English
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills, attention to detail
