Food Scientist

Our client, a a market leader in baking technology and frozer to oven manufacturer, is looking for a Food Scientist to join their QC/QA/Product Development team. 

 

Full-time, Perm-hire

Location: Scarborough

Salary: up to $50K

 

Summary: The Food Scientist will focus on developing high quality products for our customers, as well as performing standardized physical and chemical tests on bakery products to test new ingredients, flavours and packaging.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Primary duty includes testing new ingredients and flavors to determine whether they meet specifications and quality standards.
  • Assist in the development of high quality, sweet & savoury bakery products
  • Review industry developments, and initiate and manage studies/projects for application to existing products
  • Evaluates and identifies alternative ingredients and process improvement opportunities to reduce cost, while maintaining quality parameters.
  • Product analysis, ingredient gathering, sampling, sample submission, sensory evaluation, and product trials
  • Prepare demonstration samples for customers as requested by Sales & Marketing department
  • Regularly conduct product shelf life studies and assist in formulation control process
  • Maintain document control for formulations, nutritionals, raw material specifications, and allergens
  • Maintain the product development lab in a state of general order and cleanliness.
  • Actively network within the industry to stay current with latest technology advances, customer requirements and consumer trends
  • Various other R&D duties as may be required from time to time

Physical Demands

  • May be required to stand/sit for long periods of time while frequently bending, stooping or squatting
  • Must be able to work in various weather and temperature conditions which include extreme heat, humidity and cold
  • Must be able to work in tight or enclosed spaces
  • May involve repetitive motions such as computer work/typing


Job Requirements:

  • BSc Degree in Food Science or a related field
  • 5+ years’ experience in a similar role would be considered an asset
  • Pastry experience is a definite asset
  • Experience in a Food Manufacturing environment (HACCP)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize on a regular basis
  • Experience managing/supervising staff is an asset
  • Meticulous attention to detail, especially with regard to food hygiene and safety
  • Strong computer and presentation skills
  • Ability to evaluate, discuss and/or form an opinion of laboratory test results
  • Must be able to work independently with a high degree of self initiative
